Commuter Challenge a Huge Hit!
The 2011 Commuter Challenge event was a huge hit once again in Greater Victoria this morning! Twenty cyclist/driver teams challenged one another from around the community to see who could get downtown first! All participants were instructed to follow the rules of the road and to legally park. This is what happened.
Of the twenty teams:
15 cyclists outclassed their driving counterparts by an average of 2-3 minutes. This included teams coming from Uptown to Downtown, Colwood Corners, Atkins Park & Ride (Westshore to Southshore), CFB Esquimalt, and Hillside Mall!
From Royal Oak, the driver edged out the cyclist by almost 10 minutes however, under different traffic conditions this may have been a different story!
Today’s message? Cycling is a highly practical and efficient way of commuting to work. Not to mention the health benefits, cost savings & benefit to our community! And, most of all, it’s FUN!
