Canucks Photo Contest
We made it to the finals! What a great thing to be proud of! And people were proud - all across BC. A few wore their Canucks jerseys while participating in Bike to Work Week and sent us the photo - showing real community and provincial spirit! We may not have won the Stanley Cup - but we sure worked hard! Here are the winner & two finalists for the Canucks Photo Contest.
Teri Stoyer, of Papua, who is interning in Abbotsford with Mennonite Central Committee won our Canucks contest, scoring a “fan pak” donated by the Vancouver Canucks. Though we had lots of creative submissions from people registered for Bike to Work Week sporting their Canucks gear, we thought Teri’s story was pretty inspirational. Thank you to everyone who entered and sent us their photos!
In the words of Karyn, bike to work week team leader for Mennnonite Central Committee “This year Mennonite Central Committee’s most avid Bike-To-Work participant has been Teri Sroyer. Teri came to us as an International Volunteer Exchange Participant in the fall. He is from Papua and has been working in the MCC Warehouse for the past eight months while learning language and culture from those around him. Teri keenly jumped (cycled?) into all opportunities presented by Bike-to-Work week and whole-heartedly embraced the idea of riding “with the mayor” on Tuesday. When he heard about the Canucks Gear contest he showed up in a Papua-Canadian-Canuck Fusion biking costume – complete with First Nations beaded necklace representing the Canucks, and team flag wedged between a Canadian flag and a Papua flag. Pretty amazing for someone from a country where hockey is hardly a known concept! That’s pretty cross-cultural!
