Bike to Work Week 2012: May 28 – June 3

Team Leaders

Team leaders are a critical component in making Bike to Work Week a resounding success. To become a team leader, all that is required is:

  • the desire to participate in Bike to Work Week
  • the desire to encourage participation in Bike to Work Week Additional skills and characteristics that will make a person more effective include:
  • basic knowledge of cycling and cycling infrastructure
  • a little time to send us basic information

Why be a Team Leader?

Team leaders help to bring Bike to Work Week and biking as a habit to the workplace. Team leaders provide tips, ideas and information to fellow employees which gives these people an opportunity to explore the fun and health benefits of active living. There are many benefits to being a leader:

  • helping others
  • encouraging support for cyclists and cycling at the workplace
  • demonstrating leadership and initiative at work
  • For those who want to see more people lead active, healthy lives, being a team leader is a great way to inspire friends and colleagues!

Team Leaders: A Primer

Each participating employer site will have at least one team leader. The team leader has a number of responsibilities (none of them onerous!).

The team leader is in many ways key to the week’s success as s/he is encouraging co-workers to participate. For this reason we compensate each team leader with a complimentary Bike to Work Week T-shirt. Here are the responsibilities of the team leader:

  1. Register their team on biketowork.ca, your team will be broken into categories based on how many people are at your work place.
    • Mini (1 - 9 employees)
    • Small (10 - 20 employees)
    • Medium (21 - 50 employees)
    • Large (51 and up)
  2. Encourage co-workers to cycle to work.
  3. The team leader will record participation for each day indicating: cyclists, new cyclists and total employees.
  4. Team Leaders will e-mail the names of those to be entered into the end of week draw to cowichan@biketowork.ca

Except in the "Mini" category (see below), the winning team is determined at the end of Bike to Work Week by participation. The winning team will have the highest percentage of cyclists participating vis-a-vis the total number of employees at the worksite. A tie would be settled with a draw. In the Mini category all teams with participation rates greater than 65% are entered for a chance to win a random draw.

The team prizes will be dinner coupons to Just Jakes/Craig Street Brew Pub. Bike To Work Cowichan is able to provide these prizes thanks to the generosity of Just Jakes/Craig Street Brew Pub and the rest of our partners.

Categories are determined according to the size of employers. Team prizes are awarded only to participants - a participant being any co-worker who has cycled to work at least once during Bike to Work Week.

Other Prizes

We have lots of great prizes in a draw which will be held at our Wrap-Up Event, Friday, June 1st from 3:00p.m. to 5:30p.m. pm in Duncan City Square, Downtown Duncan (attendance not necessary to win a prize). See the prizes page for more information on prizes.
